Mission statement

The Heinrich Schütz House

is a museum of cultural and musical history devoted to the composer Heinrich Schütz. It is located on the authentic site of Schütz’s life and work in Saxony-Anhalt. The museum sees itself as a place of memory and an important supraregional centre for work on Schütz. Through extensive exhibitions and events, it offers an interdisciplinary presentation of his life, oeuvre and reception.

The museum was established in 1985, and is maintained by the city of Weissenfels.

The Weissenfels Music Association “Heinrich Schütz” e.V. was founded on 25 May 1993, and currently has seventy-four members. From the very start, it supported the city of Weissenfels in the museum work of the Heinrich Schütz House and in organising events. The city passed responsibility for the museum to the association in 2003. In the years that followed, the Weissenfels Music Association succeeded in constantly developing the Heinrich Schütz House and extending its reputation far beyond Weissenfels. The high point of the association’s work so far has been the renovation of the Heinrich Schütz House and the restructuring of the permanent exhibition, carried out between 2009 and 2012. At the end of 2015, the Weissenfels Music Association returned responsibility for the Heinrich Schütz House to the city of Weissenfels. Since then, it has supported the museum’s work as a friends’ association.

Trustees

The Heinrich Schütz House’s Board of Trustees brings together twenty-two prominent individuals from all over Germany. Their aim is to help the city of Weissenfels nurture the musical legacy of Heinrich Schütz as part of the city’s other important cultural traditions. The Trustees initiate and promote projects with the objective of making the museum familiar to a broad national and international visiting public. One important task is the preparation of celebrations to be held in 2022 for the 350th anniversary of Heinrich Schütz’s death.
